A Cross Stitch Update

I really appreciated all your nice comments about the Spring road trip.  Every day it is more Spring-like here.  Even the rain is great because everything looks so green and fresh afterwards.  New things seem to be coming up each day in the yard.  Now for cross stitch.  First, I'll show you the Slicker Bunny .  We found a frame at Micheals that fit the design perfectly so it was a nice cheap framing experience!  Now I am back to the antique sampler.  I did find a few pictures, as last time I posted about it several people said the link didn't work for them.  My big issue was how much to stick to the original when I did not like the colors.  Since I am not a designer, I decided to make the sampler in colors that I will like.   The design will be true to the original sampler, but not the colors. So far , I am liking it better than I ever did with my other starts.

We are having true Slicker Bunny" weather!!

The start of the antique sampler.

The front of the original.  It is very faded!

Bottom of the original

 Top of the original

The very bright back of the original.  We originally tried to match these colors.  I would get one line done and think , " No these colors will look awful in my house. They are way too bright."

I sincerely hope I will be honoring Elizabeth Garbutt by stitching the sampler even though I am changing her colors!
I will be spending some time with family for the next 10 days.  I might not get to blogging as often as I like.  I will see everyone in 10 days for sure.  Hopefully with lots of the old sampler stitched.

  1. Slicker Bunny is adorable. You found the perfect frame. How interesting that the colors are SO much brighter on the reverse side of your antique sampler. I think we' ve come to think of the soft, faded colors as being the original ones.

  2. Congrats on a beautiful finish and love the frame for Slicker Bunny! The original sampler is amazing. I am assuming the threads are always brighter on the back because of less being exposed to the elements. Stunning colors your stitching her in - Beautiful!!!
Have a great time with your family. love Annette

  3. I love your Slicker Bunny finish. So bright and cheery.

I look forward to seeing how your reproduction of the antique sampler comes along. How lucky to have the original. Our national museum has some cross stitch samplers, but when I looked for them recently they were no longer on display.

Enjoy the time with your family.

This sampler is a real beauty. I think I'd also choose more muted colours than the ones that are seen on the back. You made such a nice strat on it. Looking forard to seeing more wen you come back. Hav ea great time with your family.

  9. I think that in order to enjoy stitching such a lovely piece you need to like how it looks and while the colours are changing, the design is the spirit of the piece in my opinion I think it is a tribute to the original that you are that you are inspired to re create the design.
    Slicker Bunny looks great framed:)

  13. What an adorable finish, Barb--the color changes are so cute and that fabric truly is perfect! I'm so impressed that you got him framed so quickly--I'm not the best at getting my stuff framed. I think that is one reason I stitch so many smalls because I know I will finish them :)

I'd say your sampler is going to be lovely--good for you for choosing colors that you like. I just did the same on my latest finish...

  14. What an interesting project you have in reproducing the antique sampler ! I think making changes to it is staying faithful to the time when stitchers would make changes, most often based on the materials at hand. Have fun!
